M. Subhashini Vijay Santhanam
From Within Academy was founded in February 2003 by M. Subhashini Vijay Santhanam to provide high-quality education and training in the Classical Indian dance called Bharatanatyam. A 2,000 year-old art form that originated in the temples of South India, and evolved during the Sangam Age (500 B.C. to 500 A.D.), Bharatanatyam has enjoyed a resurgence in the early part of this century.
Located in Issaquah, Washington, the From Within Academy teaches dance to everyone from the young to the young at heart. And, within a span of seven years, it has grown from four to 145 students! The Academy also includes a smaller nonprofit, professional performing group called From Within Nucleus.

Subhashini Santhanam serves as the director of From Within academy, and is also artistic director of the from within nucleus. A dancer since the age of nine, she studied with many prestigious teachers, and was an established dancer in India before coming to the United States in 2000. In 2003 Subhashini received the Washington State Apprenticeship to expand her dance repertoire ; she has trained extensively in Carnatic vocal music and had a short stint in the Kathat style of dance as well. Subhashini currently teaches beginning and intermediate dance classes to From Within students, and also has a separate performance career outside of the Academy.
The work of From Within Academy and Subhashini has won recognition from organizations such as the Bellevue Arts Commission and King County’s 4Culture, and their most recent show, “Love Is In The Air”, danced to a full house and won rave audience reviews! Subhashini actively seeks to promote knowledge and appreciation of Bharatanatyam dance to help ensure its continuation from one generation to the next. And, through the From Within Academy and From Within Nucleus, she hopes to nurture our “common artistic spirit” and “in a small way help bring joy and peace” to her students, dance school parents, co-artists, and audiences throughout the Greater Seattle area.
