Painter and conceptual artist Kate Vrijmoet is based in Seattle, WA – USA. Vrijmoet received her MFA from Syracuse University. Her paintings and installations focus on the human body as well as the human condition, and on issues of consciousness, scale, admissibility and ownership. In 2012 Vrijmoet is one of 16 American artists invited to participate in the 5th Beijing International Biennale. Also in 2012 her sound installation, Mother May I…? was awarded Best Installation by Charlotta Kotik, Curator Emerita Brooklyn Museum of Art in the Brooklyn based Wide Open show. In 2011 the Mother May I…? video documentation was exhibited at the Orange County Center on Contemporary art in a show endorsed by Nicolas Bourriaud who coined the term “relational aesthetics.” Vrijmoet has shown her work in NYC in shows juried by curators of the Met (Anne Strauss) and the Guggenheim (Nat Trotman). She won 3rd Prize in the 2010 Ecuador Biennale. Her work has been published in New American Paintings, The Seattle Times and in 2010, the Center on Contemporary Art in Seattle published a 42-page catalog for her solo show, Kate Vrijmoet: Essential Gestures. A show of her Accident paintings is scheduled in November 2013 at the Elsvelt Gallery at Columbia Basin College in Eastern Washington.
