In Brief

The Future of Arts Education in Public Schools

AAF Director and past President Rena Ilumin is initiating a new committee to explore possible solutions to the decline in arts education funding in public schools in Seattle and other urban centers.  Working first to form alliances with educators and like-minded organizations, the new Allied Arts Foundation Education Committee hopes to find solutions to reverse the course of the 30-year decline in the funding for public school arts programs. Possible Important Change in US Nonprofit Status

While the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction ended its session with much ado about nothing, several pieces of possible legislation were left on the table for further review before automatic cuts go into effect in 2013 under the Budget Control Act passed in August 2011. Among these is a recommendation that nonprofit tax-deductible status be eliminated. That’s right. All 501(c)3 organizations would retain their tax exempt status, but contributors would no  longer be able to claim a tax deduction for their contributions to them. This would have a chilling effect on any nonprofit whose income is heavily dependent upon contributions and solicitations. Pass the word to your favorite charities and arts organizations. You can read more about it here.
